The New Jersey Osteopathic Society was organized in 1901 and incorporated in 1903. The organization changed its name in 1948 to the New Jersey Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons. The records in this collection document the origin and development of the Society from its founding in 1901 to about 1985. The bulk of the material, however, concerns events in the 1930's, when osteopaths were engaged in a difficult struggle for equality within the medical profession. Correspondence, news clippings, and typescript reminiscences of participants document this phase of the organization's history. Other materials include, founding documents, membership records, bulletins, and programs. Of particular note are two loose-leaf notebooks compiled by Howard Levine, DO, President, NJAOPS, and Mr. Robert Chapman, Executive Director, NJAOPS, which document the Association's role in the founding in 1976 of the UMDNJ-School of Osteopathic Medicine on the Stratford Campus. Other materials, including organizational records, relate to other matters. The researcher should note that the last eight file folders in the collection consist of manuscript notes and photocopied documents prepared by someone researching the history of NJOS before the collection was donated. They are not, therefore, properly records of NJOS.
